The Killables Trilogy, by Gemma Malley
A really good
story - a bit of adventure, a smattering of post-apocolyptic Sci-Fi, some
relationship stuff (not too much) and a great idea running through it.
It starts off in a community which has come together to protect themselves from the
Evil outside the city walls. But nothing is quite what it first appears!
It is the sort of story you don't want to end! I found myself reading more and
more slowly, at the end, so I could read it for longer!!
AND
Red Phonebox, by various authors
A wonderful book written collaboratively by many authors! Time
travel and adventure. Moving between places and ages through old red phoneboxes.
I loved it and cannot wait for the sequel!

Everyman collection of 20th Century classics
Mr A. Waters
The Everyman collection of 20th Century classics of literature is a goldmine! I'm
reading collected writings of George Orwell and the totally enthralling
masterpiece novels of Raymond Chandler (Philip Marlowe private
detective)...There is the complete collection in two volumes in the Everyman
collection.

This won the Booker prize about 10 years ago amid some controversy and I've had a
copy sitting on the shelf for a long while, with intention to read when I could
get around to it.
I wish I hadn't waited so long. Whilst I have little
affinity with a teenage Texan, Vernon's persona, and his unfairly put upon,
abused and demonised character spoke to me, and I was rooting for him the whole
way. I expected the rug to be pulled out from underneath at the end, but I
wasn't disappointed and the denoument that was revealed in the last few pages
brought great satisfaction.
The book was humourous throughout and satirised 21st century life, especially the 'vote him off' culture that
predominates modern times. The attitude was reminiscent of J D Salinger's 'Catcher in the Rye', and there can't be any higher praise than that.

A young woman of Jewish ancestory is asked by a old man who used to be a Nazi to help him die and
end his torment. Would his death be a kindness or revenge? Will she do it? All this and bread!

A sensitive and thought-provoking tale of a mentally ill narrator following the breakdown of his marriage. An easy read that engages you from the start, you can't help but sympathise with Pat Peoples.
