Accelerated Reader from Renaissance Reading
How you can support reading and literacy in the Thomas Aveling School
As a parent/carer of a youngster starting school in September we would like to invite you to become involved in raising the standard of lliteracy across the Thomas Aveling School.
In September all year 7 students will follow a reading programme developed by Renaissance Learning called Accelerated Reader. It is envisaged that this structured reading of Fiction and Non Fiction books will benefit your youngster’s progress in all subjects.
Students will take a computerised reading test during the first week of the September term. This test will give them a reading level/range. They will then be asked to choose an appropriate reading book from within that range. Books in the school library have been graded and will provide students with a wide range of material. There is also plenty of scope for your child to use books that they may be reading for pleasure at home - just have a look at this web site http://www.arbookfind.co.uk/UserType.aspx to view the whole range of books that are covered by this programme.
Your youngster will be given a set period in which to read the book, he/she will then be asked to take a short computerised test to ascertain their understanding of what they have read. They will then choose another book and complete another test - and so on and so forth. Their reading level will be tested at regular intervals to ensure that they are choosing material to stretch their ability not just settling for the easy option.
You will see that ‘Reading’ will, on occasions, be set as homework – this is something that we would ask you to monitor on the reading log that your youngster will be given. You will also have the opportunity to monitor your youngsters reading history and progress by logging on to ‘Home Connect’ via the Renassaince Reading Website. Although passwords will not be available until reading levels have been set, a preview of how the scheme works is available on www.renaissance-learning.co.uk, Select ‘FREE On Demand Video Tutorials’ followed by ‘Home Connect for Accelerated Reader’ Passwords and logging on instructions will be sent home via letter/email shortly after term commences in September.
If you have any queries or for more information, please contact wither Mrs Jeanes in the Library.
